A Jersey boy with a knack for numbers, a gift for making people trust him, and an all-consuming hunger to be king of the business world, Tom Giacomaro could convince anyone of anything. As a teenager, Tom Giacomaro began working in the mob-laden New Jersey trucking industry. A charming, brash-talking salesman, he climbed the ranks, and let his lust for money and relationships with New York and Philadelphia crime families send him spiraling into a world of drugs and violence. Forced to go on the lam in South Africa and Europe he returned a year later - with millions of dollars´ worth of diamonds stuffed in his underwear. And that´s only the beginning. In his memoir, Tom details how he eventually hashed out a deal with the FBI, agreeing to become a special crime informant to avoid jail time - only he somehow manages not to rat anyone out and, incredibly, continues his high-finance, shady dealings, luring celebrities and other high-profile contacts to invest millions in his new business ventures. When it all inevitably comes crashing down, Tom is thrown in prison for over a decade - yet, even behind bars, he´s able to get what he wants from anyone: the warden, the doctors, the guards, and his fellow inmates... and finds a way to get released early. Cowritten by Natasha Stoynoff, The King of Con is the true story about a smart, streetwise Jersey boy who talked his way to the top and became richer and more successful than his wildest dreams. It offers an unforgettable look into the life of a man who became hooked on living life to thrilling and dangerous excess, rubbing elbows with celebrities and crime bosses, until he was humbled by the FBI, by the US Attorney, and by life itself. Now, Tom is back in his old New Jersey neighborhood. His mob cronies are calling, his palms are itching to make billions again, and the US Attorney´s office is watching. Will he stay on the straight and narrow, or will he return to his old ways and st 1. Language: English. Narrator: Thomas Giacomaro. This is an autobiography about a man from New Jersey born in 1947. Following his graduation from high school in 1965, he enlisted in the Marines and went to Vietnam. Home and honorably discharged before turning 21, he meandered for a few years in the time of the anti-war movement and psychedelic drugs that were the late ´60s and early ´70s. He found his feet in aviation with his first introductory flight. He immediately knew piloting an airplane was what he wanted to do. His involvement in the drug culture led to incarceration and jeopardized his future, though. He met a woman fell in love and has been married for 42 years. They raised a family and built a house while he struggled to stay employed as an airplane pilot. The ebb and flow of the pilot employment market led to various jobs and even an attempted career change. After earning a degree at a culinary school, he bought a failing restaurant and gave it a go for a few years. Before becoming bankrupt he managed to get back in aviation as the restaurant was failing. The return to flying was in turbine powered equipment at first doing more night freight work, but it led to his best job ever. Someone ran an ad for a position in Africa: ´´Sabreliner Captain wanted so I can give my man a holiday.” The timing was perfect because it was the same type airplane he had been flying. The job was for a month but he stayed on for four years as pilot for a dictator’s cabinet in the heart of Africa. It wasn’t all smooth air over there but survive he did. On returning to the States he went back to grass roots stick-and-rudder agricultural aviation for three years, spraying corn in Iowa. In the journey there was one wife, two children, two sailboats, one airplane and one house built. He also earned two Associates degrees. One in Science/Math and the other Arts/Culinary. 1. Early in 1977, thousands of artists, writers, musicians, activists and scholars from Africa and the black diaspora assembled in Lagos for FESTAC ´77, the 2nd World Black and African Festival of Arts and Culture. With a radically ambitious agenda underwritten by Nigeria´s newfound oil wealth, FESTAC ´77 would unfold as a complex, glorious and excessive culmination of a half-century of transatlantic and pan-Africanist cultural-political gatherings. Devised by Chimurenga and edited by Ntone Edjabe and Akin Adesokan, this is the first publication to consider FESTAC in all its cultural-historic complexity, addressing the planetary scale of the event alongside the personal and artistic encounters it made possible. As the tenth title in Afterall´s Exhibition Histories series and the third in Chimurenga´s Chimurenga Library series, the book features a bespoke expanded format and design scheme, and gathers extensive unseen photographic and archival materials, interviews and new commissions. Text: Allioune Diop, Barkley Hendricks, Audrey Lorde, Dominique Malaquais, Marilyn Nance, Ugochukwu-Smooth Nzewi, J.D. Okhai Ojeikere, Elvira Dyangani Ose, Betye Saar, Wole Soyinka (among others).
