Mapping Pathways to a Sustained Agribusiness Fu...

As declining revenues show up on its quarterly earnings report, the agribusiness stock price may decline during recession. Dividends may also slump, or disappear entirely. Instead of cutting the market research budget, you need to know more than ever how consumers are redefining value and responding to the recession. Although most agribusiness companies are making employees redundant, chief executives can cement the loyalty of those who remain by assuring employees that the company has survived difficult times before, maintaining quality rather than cutting corners and servicing existing customers rather than trying to be all things to all people. Mapping pathways to a sustained agribusiness future in Africa requires stakeholders to focus on the following areas: agribusiness entrepreneurship and economic growth, gender and rural development, marketing segmentation and consumer behaviour for food, corporate social responsibility and crisis management of agribusiness firms, advertisement and agribusiness, SMEs development and poverty reduction, intrapreneurship and productivity of agribusiness companies, insecurity and national development issues.

Preventing Violent Conflict in Africa

Horizontal inequalities are root causes of violent conflict in Africa. Yet, people take actions not because of statistical data on inequalities, of which they might not be aware, but because of injustices they perceive. This volume analyses the results of original surveys with over 3,000 respondents in African cities and towns, exposing clear discrepancies between objective inequalities and people's subjective perceptions. The contributors examine experiences in country pairs and probe into the reasons why neighbouring countries, sharing common historical traits, sometimes took contrasting pathways of peace and violent conflict. Combining quantitative analysis and qualitative anatomy of historical experiences of conflict and reconciliation in Rwanda, Burundi, Ghana, Côte d'Ivoire, South Africa, Zimbabwe, Uganda, Tanzania, Kenya and Nigeria, the study brings forward a set of policy recommendations for development practitioners. This work further addresses the issue of institutional choice and reveals how sustainable power-sharing and decentralisation contribute to political stability in Africa.

Internationalization of the social sciences rests on the setup of international scientific infrastructures, networks, and research agendas. Yet it has also stimulated discussions on academic dependency and the need for the indigenization of theories and methods. This book traces phenomena that accompany the internationalization of social sciences in different parts of the world. Contributions from East Asia, India, Russia, Turkey, Lebanon, Jordan, South Africa, and Latin America offer manifold perspectives on the pathways and desiderata of internationalization and make this volume an important basis for future debates.

ISBN Grammaticalization from a Typological Pers...

This volume explores the way in which grammaticalization processes - whereby lexical words eventually become markers of grammatical categories - converge and differ across various types of language. While grammaticalization at its core is a unidirectional phenomenon, in which the same pathways of change are replicated across languages, certain language types and language areas have distinct preferences with respect to what they grammaticalize and how. Previous workhas principally addressed this question with specific reference to languages of Southeast and East Asia that do not seem to grammaticalize paradigms of categories in the same manner as Indo-European languages, or form extensive grammaticalization chains. This volume takes a broader approach andproceeds systematically area by area: specialists in the field address the processes of grammaticalization in languages of Africa, Europe, Asia and the Pacific, and the Americas, and in creole languages. The studies reveal a number of unique pathways of grammaticalization in each language area, as well as identifying the universal shared features of the phenomenon.

Civil Society Organisations and Societal Transf...
77,00 € *

This Book is concerned with Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) and the challenges of facilitating sustainable societal transformation in Africa, focusing on the case of Ethiopia. It critically examines how the tensions in conceptualization of Civil Society and the discourses in international development have led to the legitimization and proliferation of 'modern' and western-based non-governmental organisation (NGO) interventions in Africa. It also studied how 'traditional' CSOs are side-lined owing to the aid architecture that regard western-based NGOs as preferred development partners. The Book analyses the ways in which local communities organise their 'traditional' associations and collectively engage in social action to transform their communities. It highlights the negative implications of the neoliberal theoretical discourses and the distortions of developmental state approaches in relation to the growth of 'traditional' African CSOs. The Book outlines critical pathways for harnessing the role of 'traditional' CSOs in the future societal transformation process in Africa.
