This research examines racial discrimination from an intertextual perspective. It investigates different reasons substantiating this phenomenon in both the U.S. and South Africa in the twentieth century. Moreover, it argues that though the manifestations of racial discrimination are manifold, skin color interpretations and prejudice rank prominent. The study considers the negative as well as the positive impacts of racial discrimination on black characters. It discusses similarities and dissimilarities in the works under study. Clearly, the book offers a geographical study of racial discrimination in Alex La Guma and Richard Wright, on the one hand, and in Alice Walker and La Guma, on the other. Equally, the study concerns itself with a generational representation of racial discrimination in Wright and Walker's works.

By using the Hegelian paradigm, Nwagbara has defly identified how literature can be used to interrogate the human condition in apartheid South Africa, which has been done with Alex La Guma's fiction. This is an important mode of investigation - articulated in the fictive realm - for changing our world that is currently besieged by injustice and social stratification.

Socialist Realism as Portrayed in Selected Afri...

The book looks at the socialist realist theoretical principles and how these apply to works by Alex La Guma, Ngugi wa Thiong o and Ngugi wa Mirri and Gonzo H. Musengezi. These are authors who come from different parts of Africa and whose experiences helped shape their world-views since, for Marxists, social reality is not an indistinct background out of which literature emerges or into which it blends Ann Jefferson and David Robey (1988:13) but plays a very crucial role in the composition of literary works. All the countries from which the authors in question come from were once colonized and have not, like any other such country, fully recovered from the ravages of the scourge of colonialism.

Disillusionment and Alienation in Contemporary ...

Disillusionment and alienation are significant markers of post-independence literature in Africa. In the domain of the novel, these markers have been ably portrayed in the novels of writers as diverse as Chinua Acbebe, Wole Soyinka, Festus Iyayi, Ayi Kwei Armah, Ngugi wa Thiong'O, Sembene Ousmane and others. This study is a major enterprise concentrating, in the main, on fourteen post-independence novels written by Ngugi, Armah, Sembene and Alex La Guma, who although reflected these same markers, but situates them in the context of apartheid South Africa. Unlike, the common view that these writers write works that are programmatic in structure, and therefore inferior as creative art, the study affirms the relevance of the writers and works spotlighted in this book, especially because the writers create a nexus between their art and the African society by so doing. The study further avers that programmatic creative works can be edifying in formal terms, when deftly handled by writers as demonstrated by the spotlighted writers and works in this book. This is a work that will be relevant to those researching in the field of African literature, especially in the genre of the novel.
